Assessment Consultation: What to Expect and How to Prepare

If you're looking for a second opinion, have questions about your diagnosis, treatment plan, injuries, or are experiencing persistent or acute pain—even if it's your first consultation—here’s what to expect.

During your consultation with Dr. Ricardo Monge

Medical history and patient record

The first step is to get to know you and understand your case. We’ll discuss your symptoms, personal and family history of degenerative diseases, whether you practice any sports, or if you’ve had any accidents.

If you already have recent tests, it’s important to bring them. For fractures, bring X-rays; for specific injuries like meniscus or ligament tears, bring your MRI. For osteoporosis, bring a bone density scan. This only applies if you already have them—if not, don’t worry, we’ll request the appropriate tests during your consultation.

Why are they useful? The more information we have, the more accurate our diagnostic impression will be.

Physical examination

Next, we’ll conduct a physical examination. Please wear comfortable clothing or garments that allow easy access to the affected area without causing discomfort or pain.

We’ll perform specific movements to identify the problem area. Depending on the case, we may also use an ultrasound (a tool that provides real-time images of soft tissues to diagnose tendinitis, bursitis, or joint effusions).

Diagnosis and treatment

We will request additional tests if needed to support the diagnosis and suggest the most appropriate treatment. We’ll also discuss whether conservative treatment can be extended or if surgical intervention (open or minimally invasive) is necessary—along with benefits and recovery timelines.

What’s the goal? To restore musculoskeletal function as quickly as possible.

Key recommendations for your consultation

During your consultation, feel free to ask any questions you may have so we can provide you with the necessary information at your pace. Together, we’ll explore all available treatment options to help you live pain-free.

At the end, review what was discussed and make sure you understand:

  1. The diagnosis
  2. The treatment plan

Make sure everything about your case was clearly explained and ask any questions you may have. If needed, request guidance or additional material to review at home or with your family.
